“That’s not good,” Darius muttered. He went to the window and pulled the

curtain aside with his middle finger. He craned his neck to peer outside. “Fuck,”

he said and let the curtain fall back into place. Turning to us, he said, “Cops.

They’re all over the car. And there’s a shitload of them.”

“For a stolen car?” I said.

“I don’t think they’re here for the car,” Ian said.

“That’s certainly not their highest priority,” Darius said. “They’re pretty well

armed. I think they know who they’re after.”

“Oh, shit,” I said.

“Yeah.” Darius grabbed the backpack off the floor and zipped it. “Which

means we need to make a run for it, like right now.”

Ian swallowed. “And what about last time we tried to make a run for it from

a motel room in this kind of weather?”

Darius shivered. I raised an eyebrow but then remembered the two of them

sprinting across the covered walkway in Grants Pass.

“Let’s hope it ends a little differently this time,” Darius said dryly. “And

we’d better come up with a plan now, because as soon as we step outside, they’re

going to see and hear us.”

“Okay, well…” Ian gestured at the fire escape map on the door. “The

breezeway goes all the way around. There’s stairs on all four corners, plus one in

the middle on each long side.”

“There could be reinforcements all over the parking lot,” I said.

“Probably,” Darius said. “But the one advantage we have over them is

speed, so let’s use it. Follow the breezeway to a stairwell, get any clear path you 182
